NFPA 855

NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems

The installation standard for stationary energy storage. Few states adopt it by name. Most reach it through the fire code: the 2021 IFC points to the 2020 edition, the 2024 IFC and NFPA 1 2024 to the 2023 edition. A fire code older than that does not reference it.

How NFPA 855 reaches each state

The route decides which edition applies. 8 states name an edition on a state page. 40 are derived from the fire code they adopt, and stay Lead until a state page confirms them.

Direct
The state names NFPA 855 in a rule or statute of its own, with an edition.
Through the IFC
Chapter 12 of the adopted International Fire Code references the standard. The IFC edition sets the NFPA 855 edition.
Through NFPA 1
Chapter 52 of the adopted NFPA 1 references the standard.
Predates
The fire code in force is older than the first reference, so nothing reaches the standard statewide.

Missouri leave the NFPA 855 to cities and counties, or have no statewide code. Their state pages say what the state does set.

Arizona, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin enforce their own code or another model code in its place. The state page names it.
