Codes of Record

Terms of use

Last updated .

These terms apply to codesofrecord.com. By using the site, you agree to them.

What the site is

Codes of Record shows which editions of the National Electrical Code and the International Codes each state has adopted. Each researched value links to the state records behind it. The site also has a guide to battery storage rules in some states.

Information only

The site gives general information. It is not legal, engineering, or code-compliance advice, and using it does not make us your adviser. Your local building or fire official decides which code applies to your project, including any local amendments. Confirm with them before you design, permit, build, or install.

Data can lag

States change their codes often. We check state records on a schedule, but a change can reach a state’s records before it reaches this site. Some states publish late or in formats that are hard to read. Researched records show the date the state’s record was last read.

What the labels mean

  • Verified: matched to the state’s own record on the date it was read. Two separate readings agree, and the passage is on file word for word.
  • Partial: researched in the state’s own record. The seal stays broken until the passage is on file word for word.
  • Lead only: a tracker lists this edition. Nobody has checked it against the state’s own record yet.
  • No data yet: no tracker lists a value, and the state’s own records have not been researched yet.

None of these labels is an approval from a state, a code publisher, or a local official.

No warranty

The site is provided as is and as available. We do not promise that it is complete, current, or free of errors. We may change or remove any part of it at any time.

Limit of liability

Codes of Record and its owner are not liable for any loss or damage from using the site or relying on it. That includes redesign costs, failed inspections, and project delays. This applies to the fullest extent the law allows.

Links to state records and other sites are for reference. We do not control those sites, and their pages can change or move.

Trademarks

NFPA, NFPA 70, NFPA 855, National Electrical Code, and NEC are trademarks of the National Fire Protection Association. International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Fire Code, and International Energy Conservation Code are trademarks of the International Code Council. Codes of Record is not affiliated with or endorsed by NFPA, the International Code Council, or UL. The site names code editions and quotes short passages from state records. It does not reproduce the codes.

Data sources

Researched values come from each state’s own records: its laws, rules, registers, and agency pages. Code adoption trackers are a cross-check, and they fill in for states not yet researched. We find new bills with data from LegiScan (opens in a new tab), used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (opens in a new tab). A bill found that way is added only after it is checked against the state’s own record.

Changes to these terms
