How Louisiana adopts the NEC
The Uniform Construction Code Commission (in the Office of the Governor, per 2026 Act 881) adopts new editions by rule amending LAC 17:I.Chapter 1 through the Administrative Procedure Act, with a notice of intent in the Louisiana Register. Statute as summarised in the commission’s Blue Book requires it to adopt only the latest editions, review within five years of a code’s publication, and give the House and Senate Commerce committees notice of intended amendments and the amended code for oversight. Legislature restructured the body in 2025 (Act 120) and 2026 (Act 881).
Cycle. Follows the model code cycle with a lag of roughly 2 to 4 years; 2021 I-codes and 2020 NEC took effect Jan 1, 2023, 2024 I-codes and 2023 NEC proposed for Jan 1, 2027.
